About Bert Lawton, Sr.

Son of Leon Robert Lawton 1860-1897 and Priscilla Kiskadden 1854-1888. Bert & Mildred were married in 1912, to this union were born ten children, Carl; Keith; Esther; Earl; Marjorie; Mary and Bert. Three children died in infancy, Francis 1912-1912; Priscilla 1932-1932; and Elmer 1933-1938. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, seven children, ten grandchildren.

Bert Lawton, 70, passed away at the University hospital in Iowa City Thursday morning, March 8th, following a lingering illness. Mr. Lawton had been in failing health since last fall and confined to his bed since the first of this year. He was taken to Iowa City February 17th and underwent surgery a few days after his arrival. His condition gradually failed until the end came Thursday.
Bert Lawton, son of Leon and Priscilla Kisskaden Lawton, was burn in Newton, Iowa July 29th, 1885, and passed away Thursday, March 8th at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 9 days.

Mr. Lawton spent the early part of his life in Palo Alto township, south of Newton and has spent his entire life within the bounds of Jasper county. He farmed most of his life, until moving to Colfax. Since that time he has worked as a carpenter and contractor. Mr. Lawton had been a resident of Colfax for 36 years.

On May 2, 1912, he was united in marriage to Mildred Short. To this union were born ten children, Carl and Keith of Des Moines, Ia.; Esther Krohn of Kansas City, Mo.; Earl of Colfax; Marjorie Whitney of Watervliet, Mich., Mary Porter and Bert of Colfax. Three children died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, seven children, ten grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services were conducted from the Bumgardner Funeral Home in Colfax, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10th, with Rev. W. L. Hawn, pastor of the Methodist church officiating.

Music was furnished by Gomer Williams, soloist with Mrs. F. B. Evans, Pianist.

Bearers were Eben Van Dusseldorp, John Horton, Howard Beery, Ralph Smith, James Cotton and Ted Henning.
Flower committee, Mrs. Eben Van Dusseldorp and Mrs. Melvin Van Dusseldorp.

Burial was in the Palo Alto cemetery near Newton, Iowa.
