Bertha Marx

Together with his wife Berta nee Aufhäuser (1869-1940 Gurs/France) and four children Moses lived in this house after Hayum and made his business as a farmer and cattledealer and a wine tavern in the evening where mainly the older citizens went to.

The oldest son of the Marx family, Siegfried, was born on July 22, 1897 in Großeicholzheim. He served in World War I. After the war he lived in Franfurt, where he committed suicide in the 30s. The reasons are not known but since many young Jewish men committed suicide in that time, probably he had political reasons.

Also Moses’ second son Julius was a soldier. He was born on January 15, 1899 and apprenticed as a salesman. Together with his brother Paul (born August 8, 1900) he left Germany just in time on July 8, 1938. Both moved to Chicago.

Moses and Berta and their daughter Rosi remained in Germany. Their business receded and also the visitors decreased since 1933. On October 22, 1940 the last three family members had to leave their home. They were deported to Gurs in France, where Berta died after a short time. Via Drancy near Paris Moses and Rosi were brought to Auschwitz where they were killed. Julius and Paul, who lived in Chicago, sold the house in 1960 to the family of Paul Moerchel, whose children preserved the building in a proper way.
