She was born in Cleveland Le Sueur Co Minn. Raised in Ottertail Co. Minn and moved to Greatfalls Cascade Co Mt. at a young age. She first married Clayton J. Bower on Dec 21 1890 in Great Falls Mt. They had 3 children together: Bertha Grace, Harold Clayton, Roy Noel Bower. All 3 born in Great falls Mt. Bertha became BM Bower the western novel writter. Her Bower family of today loves the hunt for her books, and own over 150. We are very proud to have had her in our family. She later married another western writter Bertrand William (Bill) Sinclair in Great Falls Mt in 1905. In 1921 she married Robert Ellsworth Cowan in Los Angeles California.
BERTHA MUZZY BOWER, AUTHOR OF WESTERN NOVELS DIES IN LOS ANGELES AT 68. LOS ANGELES, July 23, AP- Bertha Muzzy Bower, who as B.M. Bower wrote :Chip of the Flying U" and many other Western novels, died today at the age of 68. As the young mother of three growing children, Mrs. Bower began writing Western fiction in 1904. Two years later "Chips" was published to be followed by a flood of novels that met instant popularity. She was born in Cleveland, Minn, and was taken by her parents, Washington and Eunice Muzzy to Montana as a small child. It was on the range of that State she acquired the experience which she drew upon later in her western novels. Mrs. Bower was married three times, to Clayton Joseph Bower, Bertrand Wm. Sinclair and Robert Ellsworth Cowan. She had lived here twenty years. Surviving are a son, Harold Clayton Bower, and two daughters, Della (Dele) Frances Baird-Newman and Grace Wingarten of Australia.
