About Bertha F.W. KASTEN
GEDCOM Note
Bertha W. Kasten Hertel: Bertha had lighter colored hair and gray eyes. She wore her dresses down to her ankles, with an apron over. She would comb her hair back and pinned it back in a pug; she had a soft wave in the front. She was tall, about 5 foot, 7 inches, and on the thin side. She was an excellent cook and baker; her German potato salad was marvelous. She kept a nice clean, and pretty house.T
he Hertel family entertained constantly and she made a delicious meal with fresh home-made bakery almost daily. She would hang out the wash, care for the ducks and chickens, and worked in her garden, which consisted of vegetables and raspberries, currants and flowers and a sour cherry tree. The garden ran along the entire side yard into the back- yard. She would bring the new little chickens and ducks into the kitchen and place them in a basket, upon the big iron kitchen stove, top outside shelf; to keep them warm. My Mother, Evelyn, would stay with her grandparents a lot on summer vacations and would go with her grandmother to the store, early in the morning to buy groceries and hard rolls then they would go home and eat the rolls with butter and homemade jelly and coffee.
She had a cerebral hemorrhage, and laid in bed for only a few days until she passed away. Age 77 years old
