28 May 1635: Archibald Campbell [of Glencarradale], [London], to the laird of Glenurquhy. The Earl of Argyll has taken leave of the king with greite contentment'; he has written to recipient to meet him in Edinburgh on 15 June; rumours of wars; feels this will be a very odd year; Argyll is to lodge with writer's wife; as he will have company daily, asks for venison and wildfowl. Postscript: Argyll will remain for six or seven days in Edinburgh; suggesting sending a fallow deer and invites recipient to help eat it when he comes to meet Argyll in Edinburgh. 26 December 1635: Archibald Campbell (of Glencarradale), Edinburgh, to the laird of Glenurchey. Thanks for venison; will need more later; McGregor and the other highlandmen are ordained to remain in the tolbooth till the session sits. A message from writer's wife to effect that there are no rabbits available in Edinburgh, and that wildfowl is scarce. 2 September 1640: Elizabeth Naper, wife of Archibald Campbell of Glencarradale, Edinburgh, to [the laird of Glenorchy]. Her husband is at Dunglass, where there has been a terrible accident: "they have founde my lordes (Haddington) bodie standing on his feite with ane lettre in his hande that he hade receaved frome my lorde generall," an English servant of Haddington's is blamed but as he was blown up himself there is no further proof; her husband has been arranging Haddington's burial at Thyninghame and cannot leave the poor afflicted widow who is with child: Dr Arnot has come from her and tells writer tha she takes the accident very hard: "schoe hes takin no foode as yet and the doctor sayes that the Bairne continuallie sterres in hir bellie, and trewlie I think shoe putes hir selfe and the Bairne in great hazarde," defeat given by the Scots army to the English at Newcastle; taking of castle of Dumbartane. Postscript states that recipient's man refuses to wait for her husband's return and thanks recipient for cheese.
