Bettie Lee Winstead Wood

Bettie Lee Winstead Wood, born November 9, 1923 in Zebulon, North Carolina, Bettie Lee Winstead Wood peacefully departed this world on September 2, 2012 in Raleigh, NC. She was the daughter of the late Hubert H. Winstead and Addie Dew Winstead of Zebulon.

Bettie was a graduate of Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh, North Carolina. While in training, she had the honor of being elected the first “Miss Rex Hospital”. During World War II, Bettie served as a nurse at Walter Reed Hospital until at war’s end, when she married her first husband, Ira David Wood, Jr., and relocated to Enfield, North Carolina. Bettie spent many happy years in Enfield with family and friends. After her husband’s death in 1960, Bettie and her two children moved to Raleigh where she became Charge Nurse for the new Progressive Care unit at Rex Hospital. She also embraced a new concept of caring for people with terminal illnesses and was instrumental in bringing the First Hospice chapter to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she eventually relocated with her second husband, Clifton T. Hunt, Jr. She was a former member of the Enfield Baptist Church, and held current membership with Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. Her last days were spent with her loving caregiver Vada A. Hall; Coleen Anderson and her dear friends at Tower Nursing & Rehab of Raleigh; and Heartland Hospice of Raleigh.

Left behind to cherish her memory are Bettie’s son Ira David Wood III and wife Ashley Mattox Wood of Raleigh; her daughter Carol Winstead Wood of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Ira David Wood IV of Raleigh, Evan Rachel Wood of Los Angeles, California, Thomas Miller Wood of Raleigh; assorted nieces and nephews; her beloved youngest sister, Hilda Gothson and her husband, Bob Gothson of Raleigh.
