- "Betty Powell Cardwell, 82, of Martinsville passed away on October 20, 2016. She was born in Martinsville on August 18, 1934 to William “Willie” Esker Wright and Mallie McCrary Wright.
- "In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Stephen L. Powell; sisters, Judy Nelson and Patricia Hunt; brother, James “Bo” Wright.
- "She is survived by her husband, Gene Cardwell, Sr. of residence, daughter Deborah P. Baar and husband, Frank E. “Sonny” Baar of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; step-son, Gene Cardwell II and his wife Kristen; daughter-in-law Deborah C. Powell of Roanoke, Va.; brothers, Billy Wright and wife Jean of Fieldale, Va., David L. Wright of Titusville, Florida; Sister-in-law, Judy Wright; Brother-in-law Ralph Hunt; grandchildren, Christopher “Ryan” Akers and wife Brandy; Blake L. Powell; step grandson, Frank Howell; step granddaughters, Racheal and Millie Cardwell; great grandchildren, Will and Alyssa Akers.
- "Mrs. Cardwell was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Among her greatest joys was cooking for her family and working in her flowers. She was a graduate of Holmes Bible College. She was a Charter member of Wilson Street Pentecostal Holiness Church where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was choir director for 20 years.
- "The funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Wilson Street Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Travis Cassell officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening at McKee Stone Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
