Birdie B Burleson

Birdie Burleson of Bryan, Texas, passed away Friday at St. Joseph Regional Hospital at the age of 98. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 22 from noon till 2:00 P.M. Funeral Services will begin at 2:00 P.M. following the visitation on Monday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Huntsville. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Birdie Burleson was an exceedingly generous and loving woman. She was born at Wolf's Crossing near Kingsland, Texas, December 11, 1905 to wonderful parents, Francis Littleton Gunn and Cena Laura Ricketson Gunn.

Her husband, Dr. Jesse Burleson was head of the Foreign Language Department at Sam Houston State University. She taught science for many years in Huntsville where they lived for fifty years. Birdie and Jesse organized a field school in Puebla, Mexico, for SHSU students. Birdie loved talking, quilting, painting, Mexico, cooking, travel, nature and science. She had an incredibly keen sense of humor and made wonderful buttermilk and pecan pies. She was a great friend and will be missed greatly by her family and friends. She and Jesse enabled and assisted the education of many member of their families and friends. Their home was a dormitory for many years.

Birdie was survived by five sisters, Zola Knowles of Bryan, LaRhesa McNair of Bryan, Oleta Smith of Huntsville, Mary House of Bryan, Hazel Jackson of San Antonio; one brother, Floyd Gunn of Bryan; one son, Glynn Burleson of Shepherd; three grandsons, Edward Burleson of Dallas, David Burleson of Dallas and another Edward Burleson of Houston; one granddaughter, Katy Hunt of Houston; two great granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Burleson, her son Charles Burleson, and her brother Roy Gunn.
