William Montgomery Brown (1855 – 1937), sometimes called "Bad Bishop" Brown, was an Episcopal clergyman and author. Brown, of Galion, Ohio was consecrated a bishop of the Episcopal Church, but is best remembered as the first Episcopal bishop to be tried for heresy since the Reformation, and the first of any creed in America to be deposed for heretical teachings. He later became a bishop in the Old Catholic Church.

Brown, of Galion, Ohio was consecrated a Bishop of the Episcopal Church, but is best remembered as the first Anglican Bishop to be tried for heresy since the Reformation, and the first of any creed in America to be deposed for heretical teachings.

Bishop William Montgomery Brown was born in Orrville, Ohio in 1855. His mother was a maid, and his father a day laborer. His father was later killed in the Civil War, and at the age of six, his mother farmed him out to a harsh task master.

After seeing the way he was being treated, his neighbors sought out the authorities to remove him from such harsh conditions, and a farmer and his wife adopted William.

In 1873, he left his foster family to go to Omaha Nebraska, and worked for a judge for the years that he lived there. Upon his return to Ohio, in 1876 he applied to attend the Mount Vernon College in Alliance, Ohio (where I was born! lol). This was a Methodist Institution, he was trying to become a preacher, but failed to be admitted due to his lack of funds.

His foster brother John, told him to apply to a wealthy woman, a Mrs. Bradford, to become her carriage aid, and get some ministerial study in. He did so, and got the job. He also attended school, and graduated.

After graduation, he married Mrs. Gardner’s daughter, Ella, and Mrs. Bradford built them a mansion in Galion, Ohio- Brownella Cottage.

It is said that on Halloween night (and many other nights) that he is seen walking the glass-causeway between the home and study.
