Wolfe City Man Killed In Accident

Bob Lee Thomason of Wolfe City died in a one-car accident on SH 66 about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday during the heavy rain storm that hit the Greenville area.

However, the wreck was not discovered until about 11 a.m. Thursday when a passerby spotted the bottom rear of the car sticking out of the water of the south slough of Caddo Creek about 3 ½ miles west of Greenville.

The 19-year-old victim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Thomason of Wolfe City and was a student at East Texas State University.

Highway Patrolman David Wansley said when he reached the scene of the accident Thursday morning all he could see was a part of the vehicle so he could not tell if there were any person or persons in it.

Wreckers were called to pull the car from the water and Thomason's body was found in the car, the officer said.

He said there was no apparent cause for the wreck. Thomason was traveling east and the car went off the highway on the left side, traveling about 100 feet before it struck a concrete bridge support, flipped upside down and traveled over 30 feet in the air before striking the ground on its top and sliding into the water, the officer said. The inquest was conducted by Justice of the Peace Merrick (Mickey) Money and the body was taken to Owens Funeral Home in Wolfe City.
