Brackley, Sr died of fever shortly after his Tannery burned down in Cummington, MA. His five sons rebuilt the business and expanded it into what the Atlanta Constitution said in 1883 that their ran "business on a colossal scale", tanning "a million and a half hides a year and they were undoubtedly the largest operations in the world in sole leather....their immense purchases kept the price of hides high...they bought and manufactured immense quantities of goods, which were often forced on the market thus keeping the cost of leather down." |
