The 1840 census for Jackson, Missouri includes a limited description of Squire's household. It included 3 males under the age of five, 2 males between five and ten years old, and one male aged 30-40, which would have been Squire himself. There were also 1 female aged 10-15 and a woman between 20 and 30 years old, which would have been his wife Rebecca. So it was a household of six children, the oldest of which was a girl, presumably a daughter. (The family name is rendered Stanton in some digital records. It is an obvious transcription error.)
Squire is recorded with his wife and nine children in the 1850 census for Ozark county, Missouri. He is listed as a farmer, unable to read or write.
He is again recorded as a 54-year old farmer in the 1860 Federal Census for Marion Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas. In the household with him are his wife Rebecca, age 50, his son John, age 25, Susan, age 21 (presumably John's wife), his sons Nathaniel (age 21), James (age 17), and Marion (age 15), his daughters Mary (age 13) and Elizabeth (age 11) and son Squire (age 9). In addition to these, there are three further members of the household: Rebecca (age 7), Esquire (?) Jr. (age 5), and Isaac (7 months). These last three are of uncertain parentage. Isaac is likely to be the son of John and Susan. Rebecca could be the daughter of Squire and Rebecca, and a daughter of that name would match with their youngest son being named Squire. The 5-year-old boy whose name is uncertain due to the handwriting of the census-taker could be John and Susan's as well. The child Rebecca is listed as having been born in Missouri, as were all the known children of Squire and Rebecca from 1835 onwards. The 5-year-old boy and Isaac were born in Arkansas. Squire and Rebecca's oldest children, Sarah and Avvy are not included in this census. The certain survival of the rest of the children in this household over a ten year period is somewhat remarkable for the era. This record was taken on 16 July 1860. Sources
