About Breckjen Quick/Westfall

Breckjen MIDDAGH was born before 14 Jun 1696 in Nescotak, Ulster, NY. She was christened 14 Jun 1696 in Ulster, NY. Witnesses: Joris Aartse Middag and Catherine Rutser.

There were two Breckje(n) Middaghs born in the 1690s in the Kingston area. One was the d/o Jan Aertse MIDDAGH and Geertje Theunisse CLAERWATER. She was bp 14 Jun 1696. The other Breckje(n), the d/o Joris Aertse MIDDAGH and Marrietje Martissen YSSELSTYN, was bp 2 Apr 1699. Both Breckje(n)s were baptised under the auspices of the Kingston DRC Classis and their baptisms are recorded in its annals. Which Breckje(n) married Johannes QUICK (or KWIK) and which married Samuel KOK is open to question. It is believed that the lineage shown in this compilation, which is based on a number of assumptions, is the most logical.

Breckjen married Johannes QUICK 20 Aug 1716 in Minisink, NY. Kingston DRC records indicate the marriage was at Minisink and that they lived there following the wedding. He was born before 26 May 1691 in Rochester Township, Ulster, NY, and was christened 26 May 1691. Johannes died before 11 Sep 1726. The date of Johannes' death is assumed and is based on the fact that Brechjen apparently married Nicholas WESTVALL Jr. sometime prior to 9/11/1726 when she and Nicholas had a child, Lidia, baptized according to the records of the Kingston DRC.

According to the DRC records of his marriage to Brechjen, Johannes was born in Rochester under the jurisdiction of the Kingston Classis. Whether he and Breckjen had more than two children is unknown though it is possible given the long interval between the baptism dates of Geertje (1/28/1719/20) and Lidia WESTVALL (9/11/1726).

Breckjen married Nicholas (Niclaes) WESTVAAL before Sep 1726. The marriage date used in this compilation is based on the baptismal date of their first known child, Lidia, who was baptized in the Kingston DRC on 9/11/1726. No record has been found of Nicholas marrying Breckjen. However they had three children baptized according to the records of the Kingston DRC. The first on 9/11/1726 and the last on 7/4/1733. During the period from early 1719/20 to August 1737 there are no records for the Machackemack DRC.

Whether Nicholas and Breckjen were married and the record of their marriage lost along with all of the other records pertaining to the church for this period is an unknown. What is known or can be documented is: there are records of Breckjen and Johannes QUICK having two children baptized - one recorded in the records of the Kingston DRC (Thomas, bp record #2516) and the other in the Machackemack DRC (NYGB, Vol 41, Pg 230); and the records of Breckjen's and Nicholas' children mentioned previously. Based on the documented baptisms, it appears safe to assume that Johannes died at least a year prior to the birth of Lidia who was baptized on 9/11/1726 and that Breckjen did marry Nicholas WESTVALL subsequent to the death of Johannes.
