George Nelson Morgan (September 7, 1825 – July 24, 1866) was a Union general in the American Civil War. Morgan was born in Ontario, Canada, then moved to Minnesota and took up shipbuilding. He joined the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and advanced from Private to Colonel, commanding the 1st Minnesota at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Because of tuberculosis, he resigned, but later recovered sufficiently to command Fort Snelling, Minnesota, a training facility. He was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General in 1865, but the tuberculosis worsened and he died the next year at Fort Snelling.
His son, George H. Morgan, later became a cavalry officer, and was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Born in Canada on the Isle of Massina, in the St. Lawrence River (near Ogdensburg, NY), he was raised by his parents, William Morgan and Mary Moore Morgan, as a farmer. He married Delia Elizabeth Warner (born 15 January 1832, Enfield, Tompkins County, New York; died 15 March 1918, Minneapolis, Minn.) on 9 December 1852 at St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada).
He taught music at St. Catherines. Later he founded a steamship building company on the Great Lakes. He moved to St. Anthony, Minnesota (town was later absorbed by Minneapolis) in 1855 to take advantage of the financial boom there.
When war broke out in 1861, he joined Company E, 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry as a private, was elected Captain, and moved up in rank to become the 1st Minnesota's 4th commander, with the rank of Colonel. He commanded the unit at the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1862.
His health failing, he resigned command in May 1863, and returned to Fort Snelling, Minnesota, where he was made Post Commander, with the rank of Brigadier General.
He died of consumption (TB) in July 1866. He and Delia had 7 children: Louise Erecca Morgan (born 23 Aug 1853 St. Catharines, Ontario), George Horace Morgan (born 1 Jan 1855, St. Catharines, Ontario), Frank William Morgan (born 30 Oct 1856 St. Paul, Minn), Frederick Nelson Morgan (born 3 July 1859 St. Anthony, Minn), Della Elizabeth Morgan (born 5 Nov 1861 St. Anthony, Minn), Mary Florence Morgan (born 8 Nov 1863, St. Anthony, Minn), and Alfred Sully Morgan (born 22 Aug 1865, Fort Snelling, Minn). Bio by Morgan Benson, his great-grandson.
