Upon his death, he left behind in his desk many historic papers, including those journals of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. They were retrieved by his granddaughter Sophia.
Scotts-Irish descent. The Hammonds came to USA in 1800; JHHammond enrolled in the 5th California as a Private for the Civil War. General Grant wrote a letter to Abe Lincoln recommending JHH as someone to oversee training of African American Troops. Held in high regard by Sherman and by Grant and ultimately by Abe Lincoln. After Civil War he left the army and founded a city in Minnesota. He became a real estate magnate. He's mentioned in his grandson's memoires. In there he is said to have liked the Indians. He made money in manufacturing and somehow he became friends with the Vanderbilt family.

He was promoted to major in September of 1862 and served as acting adjutant general and chief of staff for General William Tecumseh Sherman. On October 31, 1864, he was made a brevet brigadier general for services rendered during the war.

On October 31, 1864, he was made a brevet brigadier general for services rendered during the war. He was Mustered Out on August 23, 1865.
