About Bridget Yelverton Lee Steere
LEE STEERE, Bridget Yelverton
Bridget Yelverton O’Connor was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1884,
the youngest daughter and second youngest child of Mr and Mrs Charles
Yelverton O’Connor. She arrived in Western Australia in 1891 with her
parents. Bridget married Ernest Lee Steere in December 1910 and their first
home was in Bellevue Terrace, West Perth. They then moved to 52 Mount
Street, the address shown on many of the documents in this collection.
Mrs Lee Steere was a member of the Board of Governors of the YWCA from
1922-1928 and was President from 1930 – 1939, retiring as Vice-President in
1950. She was State Commissioner of the Girl Guides’ Association from 1931
to 1953.
Ernest Lee Steere was knighted in 1948 and Bridget became Lady Lee
Steere. Sir Ernest died on September 22 1957 and Lady Bridget in 1979.
