About Brig. Gen. William Sever Lincoln, USA

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was a successful lawyer when he was appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the 34th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. After various duties in Washington D.C. , the 34th Massachusetts proceeded direct to Virginia where he led the regiment in actions at Harper's Ferry in July, 1863. During the Shenandoah Valley Campaign in May 1864, he was wounded and captured by the Confederates. After his prisoner exchange, he rejoined the 34th Massachusetts and was promoted Colonel in command in September, 1864. He participated in operations against Richmond, Petersburg and after the capture of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, he was at the surrender at Appomattox Court House in April, 1865. For meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 23, 1865. After the war, he engaged in farming and was the president of the Worchester Massachusetts Agricultural Assosication.
