BIOGRAPHY: Brittain A. E. Manuel, born Oct. 11, 1802 in North Carolina near the Pee Dee River. The Manuel family, along with other Scots from Ulster and Scotland, emigrated to America in the mid-1700s and settled in North Carolina. The elder Manuel fought, and was killed, in the Revolutionary War. His third son, born during the Battle of the Cowpens, was nicknamed Brittain by the soldiers. Brittain married Rebecca Hunnicutt and had two sons, George and Brittain.

BIOGRAPHY: The Second Brittain A. E. Manuel married Susan Mitchell and after their fourth child was born, left North Carolina for Texas. He joined in the formation of Capt. Kimbros Eighth Company Infantry of the Second Regiment of Texas Volunteers in San Augustine and went with them to engage in the Battle of San Jacinto. After the successful completion of the Texas War for Independence, he returned to his family in North Carolina.

BIOGRAPHY: His beloved Susan died after their sixth child was born, in early 1840, so Brittain A. E. Manuel decided to return to Texas to make a new start and a new home for his family. He settled on Lamar Peninsula in old Refugio County and sent word to his children to join him there, which they did. His two older daughters had married before they reached Texas. The eldest married Gen. Jackson Brown, who later became an early-day sheriff of Refugio County. The second daughter married William Watson, and the third, Margaret, married Moses Simpson, a veteran of Zachary Taylors army and very prominent in the civic affairs of Refugio County before it was divided into other counties.

BIOGRAPHY: Brittain A. E. Manuel was killed in the early 1850s while roping wild mustangs and is buried somewhere on the Lamar Peninsula.
