He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire on 12 February 1779.

He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 12 February 1779.

He succeeded to the title of 22nd Lord Willoughby de Eresby on 8 July 1779.

He succeeded to the title of 5th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven [G.B., 1715] on 8 July 1779.

He succeeded to the title of 5th Marquess of Lindsey [G.B., 1706] on 8 July 1779.

He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Lindsey, co. Lincoln [E., 1626] on 8 July 1779.

He held the office of Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain between 8 July 1779 and 1809.

On his death, the Dukedom of Ancaster and the Marquessate of Lindsay became extinct but the Earldom of Lindsay reverted to his kinsman, Albemarle Bertie, who became the 9th Earl of Lindsay.
