Joseph A Carroll came with his father and siblings to Collin County Texas between 1846 and 1850. His father, George was born in Virginia and moved the family through Kentucky, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri, before settling in North Texas.
Here they settled along Stiff Creek (near present day Melissa and McKinney), farmed, and became some of the first white settlers in the area. Joseph also speculated for land near Denton and Weatherford.
Things were looking good for the family until he joined Capt. Ruben Sanders (Burford's Calvary Regiment) of the Confederate Army on 31 Mar 1862 in Weatherford. They were stationed in Dallas, and then went on to Arkansas, where he died in the battle of Des Arc.
Joseph left widow Nancy Ann Williamson and five surviving children: Fleming "Flynn" Joseph Carroll, James Granderson Carroll, George Passmore Carroll, Elizabeth Carroll, and Mary M. Carroll May.
