About Caleb C. Willard
Several sons of Joseph, jr. (Joseph C., Henry A. and Caleb C.), were proprietors of Willard's Hotel, Washington, D. C.
Managers of Caleb C. Willard,
I am writing you in regards to kindness done by Joseph Clapp Willard , August Willard and Caleb Willard towards my African-American Great -Great -Great Grandparents and their children. In 1862 Joseph and August intervened on my Great-Great- Great Grandmother Matilda Bowie's behalf by purchasing and then freeing her son Jack Bowie to prevent his being sold South.
In 1916 in a Washington Bee Newspaper article in regard's to my Great-Great Grandparents Nathaniel & Victoria Bowie's 50th Wedding Anniversary it mentions Nathaniel being given employment in 1871 by Caleb Clapp Willard.
It appears that much kindness and compassion to my family had been extended by the Willard Family and for that we are forever thankful.
Sincerely, James Louis Bacon
