About Calvin Nance Melton

Calvin Nance MELTON was born 11 JUN 1835 in Bridgeport, Jackson Co., Alabama, and died 23 DEC 1916 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., Oklahoma. He was the son of 2. MELTON and 3. Mrs. MELTON, both of whom were born in Alabama, according to census records.

He married Francis Elizabeth JOHNSON in JAN 1855, daughter of Berry JOHNSON and Lucy BLALOCK. She was born 18 MAR 1838 in Alabama, and died JUN 1863 during the Civil War. In August, he enlisted as a private in Company C of the 18th Battalion, Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army. He was captured and held as a prisoner of War on 8 NOV 1863 at Bridgeport, Alabama, was eventually transferred to Indiana where he was released from Camp Morton, Indiana, on 10 MAY 1865.

A year-and-a-half later, he married Susan Hopkins BAILIFF 22 NOV 1866 in Jennings Co., Indiana, daughter of Edmond Pryor BAILIFF and Susan DOLEN. Calvin N and Susan Young (Jennings County Book 7, Original Source Page 54) were married and moved between Missouri and Texas. She was born 04 APR 1836 in Clermont Co., Ohio, and died 28 OCT 1881 in Neosho, Newton Co., Missouri. She was married to Henry Young prior to her marriage with Calvin Melton.

He met Elizabeth N. Haimen 20 OCT 1885 in Walnut Grove, Greene Co., Missouri, and they married and moved to Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, to be near family. She was born in JULY 1837 in Tennessee, and died 19 DEC 1922. Together, they raised Minnie's son, Calvin G. Wilkins (aka Calvin Nance Melton after legally changing his name in Colorado to honor his grandfather). Family records indicate that Calvin G. Wilkin's father was named Guy Wilkerson. He and Elizabeth were buried in an unmarked grave in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in Block 5 Lot 122 in the southwest quarter of the plot.
