About Capt. (CSA) Micajah Green Lewis

M. G. Lewis, age 43 years and a Clerk, was enumerated at Maury County, Tennessee, September 10, 1850, in the same household with Eliza Lewis 41, Benjamin Lewis 20, Mary Lewis 14, William Lewis 12, Amanda Lewis 9, and Anna Porter 1. M. Lewis, age 49 years and a Lawyer, whose Post Office was Vallecito, was enumerated at Calaveras County, California, July 14, 1860, in the same household with Benjamin H. Lewis 26, who was born in Tennessee, and Mary Francis Lewis 18. Micajah, age 52 years, joined for duty and was enrolled as Captain, Company I, Third Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers, at Mokelumne Hill, San Joaquín County California September 16 and was commissioned November 15, 1861. He was reported on Detached Service as Recruiting Officer from April 29, 1862. He was reported Present on the Return of Camp No. 15, “Reed’s Station,” Nevada Territory, en route for Salt Lake as a member of the “Column for Utah,” dated July 31, 1862. He was reported Present on the Return of Camp No. 30, Diamond Springs, en route for Salt Lake, dated August 31, 1863. From a letter by P. Edward Connor, Colonel, Third Infantry, California Volunteers, Commanding District, dated Headquarters, District of Utah, Camp Douglas, Utah, December 2, 1862, to Lieutenant Colonel Richard C. Drum, Assistant Adjutant General, Department of the Pacific, San Francisco: About a week since I sent ten men to protect the telegraph station at Big Sandy, which was threatened by Indians. On Saturday last they stole one hundred horses from Fort Bridger Reserve, belonging to some mountaineers, who were wintering there; and fears are entertained that they will attack some of the stations of the overland mail. I have therefore ordered Company I, Captain Lewis, of my regiment, to garrison Fort Bridger, this winter. I shall order detachments of his company to the different stations in this district, east of here, if iI find it necessary. Pacific Springs Station, lately attacked by Indians, is just east of the line, dividing this district and the Department of the West, and has been garrisoned by troops from that department. The telegraph station at Big Sandy is in the District of Oregon. I shall leave the ten men there at that point until I am satisfied there is not further danger from the Indians, unless otherwise ordered. Captain Lewis left Post Camp Douglas, Utah Territory, with Company I, December 3 and assumed command of Post Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, December 7, 1862. The Return of Fort Bridge dated January 31 reported that he was absent at Camp Douglas attending a Court-martial trial since January 13, 1863. He was ordered to return to Fort Bridge February 18, 1863. During June he left Post Fort Bridger in command of an expedition which returned to the post June 21, 1863. He was appointed Acting Adjutant General, U. S. Volunteers, District of Utah, on General Conners Staff in June, 1863. Captain Lewis mustered out September 19, 1865. Micajah Green Lewis registered to vote in Calaveras County, California, during 1867. M. G. Lewis, age 63 years and a Lawyer, whose Post Office was Copperopolis was enumerated in Calaveras County, California, June 29, 1870, in the same household with William F. Lewis, age 39 years and a lawyer whose birthplace was listed as Mississippi. M. G. Lewis, age 74 years, a widower and a Miner, was enumerated at Murphys, Calaveras County, California, June 4, 1880. Micajah filed from California for a Civil War veteran's pension September 4, 1890, and received application No. 934,498, a record of the application being certified has not been found.
