Capt. Captain George Johnston, Sr

George Johnston apparently studied law in England. He was among the first to apply for license to practice in Frederick County, VA in 1743. In 1752, a deed was executed in Winchester from him to George Washington, allowing him to use the law office when plotting his surveys. He apparently left Frederick County, VA ca 1752 and took up residence in Alexandria. He was appointed Trustee of Alexandria on 7/10/1752 to succeed Lawrence Washington, a position he held until his death in 1766 when George Washington was appointed to fill the vacancy. He represented Fairfax County as a member of the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg. In 1757, he purchased Lot #71 on Water Street (now Lee St.), and built a brick house, livery and a smokehouse. All buildings remain (224 South Lee St.). He also acquired a country estate in 1763 four miles southwst of Alexandria on what is now Telegraph Road (still standing). He made the motion which Patrick Henry seconded on May 26th, 1765 which led to the repudiation of the Stamp Act. Some of the Johnston land, passed to George's son, Archibald, was named Annandale, after the home village in Scotland. It is now Annandale, VA.
