   Narrative||
   Christopher Bartlett lived in Haverhill until after the death of his second wife, Mary Clements. He may always have lived there but is probable that he moved to New Hampshire, since his will is in the New Hampshire Province Probate and he calls himself of the Haverhill District of New Hampshire. The will was executed after the straightening of the line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, so it is possible his farm then fell in the province of New Hampshire (Clement Descendants, p. 113).

Event: Note-Nar02 Note:

   Will||
   The will of Christopher Bartlett was written 20 May 1747 and, after his death, proved on 2 July 1747 at Haverhill District, New Hampshire. He names his son Nathaniel Bartlett as the sole executor of his will (New Hampshire Provincial & State Records, 33:470-473).
   He calls himself Chritepher Bartlit of Haverhill District and Province of New Hampshire in New England, gentleman (ibid).
   He bequeaths to Rachel his wife; grandson Christepher Bartlit son of Nathll Bartlit; my daughter Hannah Marston; my daughter Susanna Carlton; my daughter Mary Clement; my three sons namely Nathaniel Bartlit, John Bartlit and Jonathan Bartlit (ibid).

Event: Note-Nar03 Note:

   Massachusetts - New Hampshire boundaries||
   A new line between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was formed in 1741; nearly one third of Haverhill, Massachusetts fell to the north into New Hampshire. Soon thereafter, and because many individuals north of the line refused to pay taxes to Haverhill, Massachusetts, an exact list of the polls and estates on the north side of the line was made. This list included residents Christopher Bartlet, Nathaniel Bartlet and Abraham Chase. (History of Haverhill, p. 310).
   Following in 1742 a list of polls and estates was made in New Hampshire. For Haverhill the following were listed in this sequence, seemingly indicating they were neighbors living adjacent to each other: Christopher Bartlett, Jonathan Bartlett, Natanll Bartlett and Abraham Chase (NH Estate List 1742).
   On the southern border of New Hampshire, the portions taken off from old towns of Massachusetts soon became separate towns of New Hampshire. Newtown (later named Newton) was incorporated in December 1749; Plaistow, a part of Haverhill was incorporated February 1749 (in 1767 a portions of Plaistow was set off as Atkinson); Timberlane (later named Hampstead), made up of parts of Haverhill and Amesbury was incorporated January 1749; Salem, made up of parts of Haverhill, Methuen and Dracut was incorporated May 1750 (History of NH (Stackpole), p. 367).
   Compiler's comment: The above confirms that the Haverhill property of the Bartletts and Chase changed jurisdiction in 1741 from Massachusetts to New Hampshire. In the 1742 poll listing above, this compiler believes that Christopher Bartlett is the father of Jonathan and Nathaniel; and, that Abraham Chase is the father of Lydia Chase who married Jonathan Bartlett.
