Notes

David, the oldest of these two sons, settled on the north side of the road where P. W. Sheppard now lives, and Samuel in the old house which stood a few yards west of the residence of Mr. Peter O. Voorhees.

Capt. David Stout, son of Jonathan the pioneer, who as stated in article number 45 was left in 1722 the half share o f the undivided one sixteenth of a whole proprietary, had the farm on the north side of the road opposite his brother Samuel. David's tract extended from the first cross road s east of Hopewell Borough to the Province line at Stoutsburg, and was bounded on the north by the Col. Joseph Stout tract, now occupied by Mr. George E. Weart. It is a fact worthy of note that these two brothers had divided this tract so evenly between them, that in 1753, thirty years after they had inherited it, when an assessment was made to create a fund for the extermination of wolves and panthers, there was a difference of only seven pence in the amount of t heir assessment.

The residence of David Stout stood on the road between Hope well and Stoutsburg, a little southeast of the present brick mansion of Peter W. Sheppard. The old house was the home of three generations of the family, until David Stout, Es q., grandson of the first David, built in 1822, the mansion n now standing.

David Stout senior was born in 1706, and in 1726, married E Elizabeth Larison as we have stated in previous articles. Captain Nathan Stout, the author of the "History of the Stout Family," was very sparing in his compliments, but passe s a glowing eulogy on David Stout as an honest man and a Christian. In Dr. Benjamin Van Kirk's Ledgers he is called Captain David, and he was doubtless a Captain with Colonial militia.

His will is dated May 28, 1779, which probably marks about t the beginning of his disability. The will is proved December 26, 1788, and during this long period he was probably y a paralytic, as tradition says that he was unable to walk.
