About Capt. Guy Ross Madden
Guy Ross MADDEN Guy Ross Madden, born 1878, was the only son of Sir John Madden, a politician who went on to become the Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of Victoria. He attended Cumloden School in St Kilda and then the University of Melbourne. Guy Madden was active with the Victorian Scottish Regiment which was formed in 1898. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1901, and was a very keen shooter. He acted as his father’s associate in 1904, was admitted to practice in 1907, and signed the Bar Roll. He married Doris McEvoy, in a very fashionable wedding, in March 1914; they had two daughters.
It would appear that Madden did not embark for active duty overseas with the AIF, but he was recorded as being a captain attached to the 52nd Infantry (formerly the Victorian Scottish Regiment) at the Domain encampment.
It seems likely that he undertook duties at Victoria Barracks, where the formation, dispatch and administration of the Victorian Regiments of the AIF took place. He may have served with the British Expeditionary Forces, but our research could not confirm this.
After the war, he continued as a barrister and was often mentioned in the papers for his field shot prowess. He became principal in the firm Woolcott and Madden, Solicitors, of Bank Place. He died after a short illness in 1928 aged 49.
