Of Buffalo and Chapinville, New York.
He moved with his parents from Hatfield, Massachusetts to Canandaigua, New York. Later in 1800 he relocated to Buffalo, New York, where he became a prosperous merchant and fur trader, buying fur pelts from Indian trappers and selling to John Jacob Astor at a handsome profit.
He took an active interest in the Congregational Church and in education and philanthropy. Later on he settled in Chapinville, New York. In 1834 he moved to a farm near Norwalk, Ohio, and after his death of his third wife he went to live with two of his daughters, where he died of old age.
