THE CRANE FAMILY

JOHN CRANE came from Suffolk County, England, to America, and by 1637 he was living at Muddy Brook (now Brookline, Mass.). In 1642 is recorded as having land at Roxbury, was "Deputy to the Great General Court" in 1649.

He had two sons: Benjamin, born 1630, and Henry.


Henry Crane married Concurrence Meigs about 1663, and made several moves, to Gillford, New Haven, CT and on to Killingworth, Middlesex, CT, 11 miles away. He lived over 40 years at Killingworth, Middlesex, CT. Brother Benjamin married Mary Backus in 1655 and remained in Wethersfield, Connecticut until his death in 1692

They had 10 children. About the time of their marriage, they settled in Killingworth, CT. Crane was "young, enterprising and ommparatively poor in worldly goods, and withal a man calculated to lead rather than to be led, he cast his fortune into the new enterprise. He was one of the original planters of Killingworth, in 1665." He married second the widow of Henry Champin of Lyme, CT.

Capt. Henry Crane married twice:

1) Concurrence Meigs, born 1643, at Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, ca. 1663. Concurrence was the daughter of John Meigs (1612 - 1672) and Thomasina|Tamzin Fry Meigs (1612 - 1672).[8][9] She died in Killingworth on October 9, 1708.[10] Henry Crane and Concurrence Meigs had ten children.

2) Deborah Champion, widow of Henry Champion (a.k.a. Champin) of Lyme. Connecticut, on Dec. 26, 1709. After Henry Crane's death on April 22, 1711, Deborah, his widow, married Richard Towner..[11]

Henry and Coincurrence (Meigs) Crane had 10 children. Children include:[12]

  1. John Crane, b. after 1664, at Guilford, Connecticut[13], who succeeded his father as Representative to the General Court of Connecticut from Killingworth. John, the eldest son, married Martha Daggett, of Rehoboth, or Taunton, Mass., May 25, 1694. Father Henry was aged 29.
