LAND GRANT: First land grant was 1756 in Deed Book 15, P. 1 23, Johnston County, NC.
COURT: He was interested in politics attending court sessions of "Inferior Court of pleas and Quarter Sessions" held in Johnston County, NC, that was held at Hinton's Quarter s near Clayton, NC. Source: Johnston County Court Minutes , Book 1, P. 83.
POLITICS: He started his political career by serving as juror and witnessing deeds, etc. He passed the test to become a public official as recorded in Johnston County Court Minutes, Book 11, P. 183.
LAND: Henry owned about 3300 acres of land before his death. From a plat (Book IV, Johnston County, NC, Court Minute s 1787 thru 1792, P. 123, Item 225 by Haun) were 3 division s of land to Oliver, Henry (son of deceased John), and possibly the last was to Ambrose (looks like a fancy "A"). Henry and Ann (maybe an Oliver) had 3 sons and 2 daughters - John, Oliver, Ambrose, Ann and Elizabeth.
MARK: Henry owned much livestock and his mark was recorded in Johnston County, NC Court Minutes, Book 1, P. 46. It was a swallow fork in each ear and an under kutt in each ear.
MILITARY: Henry and his 2 sons, Oliver and Ambrose, served in the Revolutionary War. From the Military Service Records in the NC State Archives, Raleigh, NC, Henry Rains was at a General Muster (roll call) held the 4th of October , 1774, by Colonel Needham Bryan. He was listed as Captain Henry Rains of the 4th Division.
INVENTORY: Henry did not leave a will so Ann, his wife, qualified for Administratrix, and was given permission to sell the perishable goods. The inventory of Estate of Henry Rains F #3667, Johnston County, NC Wills Inventories Par t 1, 1781-1800. The land was not sold but divided between Ann, Oliver, and Henry, Jr.(perhaps the son of their deceased son who married Mary Ingram, Johnston County Court Minutes, Book IV, #225, 1791-1792.
SERVICE: Henry Rains, Esquire was appointed Sheriff of Johnston County, N. C., and in 1763, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. When the Fourth Provincial Congress met a t Halifax in April 1776, he was chosen as a delegate. He later served as a member of the N. C. General Assembly. He was granted land in 1756 in Johnston County, N. C.

Court Mtg. Mar 1786 ordered by Dower printed pages in Bk. 15 & 17. 4. Sells 200 acres to John Olliver 10 Oct 1765. w it. Henry Olliver, Oliver Rains. 5. He served in the Rev. war with sons, Ambrose , Oliver.

Dear Madam; The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in pension claim, S.31317, based upon service of Henry RAINS in the Revolutionary War.
Date and place of birth of Henry RAINS and names of his parents are not shown.
While a resident of Spotsylvania County, Virginia Henry RAINS enlisted "the year of the Declaration of Independence" and served one year in Captain Alexander Dick's company, Colonel WOODFORD's Virginia regiment; about two months later he enlisted for three years, served in Captain Alexander DICK's company, Colonel WOODFORD'S Virginia regiment, for a short time, then was ordered on board the ship "Mosquito" under command of Captain John HARRIS and shortly afterwards was captured near the Island of Bermuda on June 10, 1778 by the British ship of was "Ariodue" he was imprisoned the following day and remained there until the seventeenth of the following January, then he was put on board a British ship as a sailor and kept there until peace was proclaimed when he was liberated in London.
