About Capt. James Ross

James Ross was born to John Ross and Barbary Wiseman Ross. James and currently unknown wife (possibly Shawnee Native American Indian) may have had at least six children; James, Joseph, Richard, Alexander Ross, Elizabeth, and Rosannah. There are some researchers who say that James Ross first entered the French and Indian War in 1754 at the age of 18 and served with Captain Benjamin Simm's as 1st Corporal in North Carolina. Other information indicates that James Ross was a spy in Dunmore's War of 1774 under Captain John Wilson. Several family friends and relatives also served in that war; Matthew Rogers, Col. James Rogers, Jesse Ashby, Stephen Ashby, John Ross, etc. There is a will for a James Ross dated 1784 in Frederick Co., VA (Hampshire County). James Ross can be found in Hampshire Co., VA (listed as Frederick Co., in records) in 1782 along with a John Ross who may have either been his father or his brother. We do know that John Ross Sr. purchased land on Hoge's lick and the little Cacapon in 1766. Perhaps this is also where James Ross and family lived. Also, it is believed that James Ross' brother Thomas Ross was captured by Indians during the French and Indian War on Patterson's Creek and had a Native American as his wife. A daughter was born from this union; Millender Ross. Perhaps James Ross was also captured at this time, as there isn't evidence for land ownership or marriage for a James Ross until 1782 other than the record that he was enlisted as a spy in Dunmore's War, which leads one to believe that James Ross had experience with the Shawnee Tribe when he was possibly captured in the 1750's on the South Branch of the Potomac.

There are also records for service in Dunmore's War for a James Ross in Major John Connoly's and Captain George Astor's company along with a Daniel Brown Sr., and Jr. A Daniel Brown would go on later to marry a daughter of Joseph Harve Ross; Patsy Ross. It is speculated that this Dunmore War service belongs to James N. Ross, James Ross Senior's son. This service may account for why James N. Ross appears later in Nelson Co., KY than his brother Joseph.

It is believed now that James Ross Senior's daughter Elizabeth married Edward John Williams and his son Joseph Harve Ross married Nancy Williams. It appears that the Williams family was closely connected to the Ross Family in Hampshire Co., VA and at Fort Ashby.
