James Herbert Stimpson served in the Union Navy in the Civil War, and ran a plantation in Alabama after the war. James Stimpson served as Acting Master aboard the USS Alabama, on patrol with the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. (James Stimpson continued his duties intercepting English blockade runners. As the boarding officer on one occasion he was accused of violent and abusive language. James’ brother Francis was killed at Spotsylvania in 1864.
Just before Christmas 1870, William Stimpson and his father traveled to the vicinity of Mobile, Alabama, where the elder Stimpson owned a plantation run by William’s sibling James.
