Capt. John "Deacon" Pease, Jr.

John Pease, Jr., oldest son of John Pease Sr. and Mary Goddell, was born at Salem May 30, 1654, and married Margaret Adams of Ipswich, Massachusetts Jan. 30, 1677. Complete name is John Gill Pease.

He was apprenticed at Salem to a carpenter John Symonds, who died not not long after; and in his will assigned his apprentice to his son James and it seems probable that he continued in this profession until his removal to Enfield as evidenced by his sale of "land, house and shop."

He was one of the most prominent men in the history of the town of Enfield; he was indefatigable to promote and advance it's prosperity when an infant settlement, and after it's incorporation. He was the first surveyor, the first selectman and the first militia captain. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He died at Enfield, aged 80 years.

Bio

After being awarded a land grant at the new plantation called Freshwater (later Enfield), John Pease Jr. and his brother Robert, after examining the land, came to Enfield from Salem in 1679, and built a hut or a cellar, in the side of the hill about 40 rods east of where an old meeting house stood, and there lived through the winter alone, no other white person in the place. The next spring they removed their families and commenced the settlement, during the succeeding three years they were joined by nearly 30 families from Salem and its vicinity, which made Enfield a Salem colony.

John Jr. was a surveyor, and the settlement began building roads, shcools, a meeting house. They reserved lots for the ministry as well. More settlers joined them in the first year, including brother Johnathan Pease. John was the first town constable. The town erected its meeting house in 1684.

The first birth occured that year, it being Margaret Pease, the daughter of John Jr. and Margaret his wife. The first person who died in the settlement was Lot Killam who was one of the Salem colonists and left one son. Between 1684 and 1691, more grants were awarded, including Robert Pease II, David Bishop, Thomas Hale and John Adams.

The town was incorporated and in 1688 John Pease Jr. and Samuel Terry were the first selectmen chosen by the people. The town erected a corn mill, a sawmill was built by Isaac Meacham and Johnathan Bush. Later a distillery. A land purchase was negotiated with Indian sachem Notatuck by The Commissioners, who included John Pease Sr., Major John Pynchon, Thomas Goold (Gould), Lt. Thomas Stebbins, Deacon Johnathan Burt, Benjamin Parsons and William Denton.This was dated March 1689.
