Mollie Burgess my great great grand mother was raped during the Civil War by a man named Mr. Smith or so the story goes. Mollie was born about 1845 in Fauquier County, Virginia. We know that her parents Moses BURGESS and Caroline BRADLEYwere working a farm just above Alton Farms. Jim Burgess NOTE: This SMITH family lived at Alton Farms. I have absolutely no proof for the following statement: Yet I really believe the three best possibilities for "Mr. SMITH are the William Aquilla SMITH, and David SMITH sons of William SMITH and Mary GLASCOCK. The other possibility is Thomas Towson Smith and Norman E SMITH son of Joseph Blackwell SMITH and Eleanor Jane SMITH. I wish my wife L. J. SMITH to hold and keep the farm on which we live for her use and benefit during here life and afterwards to be equally divided among all my children or their heirs also to have one third of all my personally, the balance of my property both real and personal. I want divided among my daughters so asto make them equal. I assume Susan has received $2,000 dollars, Lucy $4,000 & Mary $2,000 and Nancy $2000 besides this there is no charge against any of them. It includes the bonds left by their grand father to me as trustee I throw unto both . because I do not know what I realized from these but much less than their face value. Cochran will my Executor without giving security Fauquier County court March 22, 1886 A paper writing dated June 24, 1884 purporting to be the last will and testament of William SMITH (Pignut) deceased with an addendum thereto with out date, was this day presented to the Court for probate and fully proved by the oath of G B Cochran sole subscribing witness and the oath of James V Brooke who testified that he was well acquainted with the handwriting of said William Smith deceased and hereby believed that the said paper writing with signatures thereto was wholly in the hand writing of said decedent and therefore said paper writing taken as whole is ok. Therefore Thompson, G B. Cochran named executor by note in writing addressed to the court renounced the burden of the execution of said will and it appealing to the satisfaction of the Court that the other practice in interest so desire. There was talk that Lee's lines had broken at Petersburg and that Richmond had been Evacuated. Some of this information had leaked out of Washington and it seemed Worth investigating. He summoned Ranger Channing Smith, a friend of the Lees, and Sent him to learn the truth. Page 260 Lee's surrender at Appomattox was announced to civilians living in the area Through a circular distributed April 10. This broadside told of the terms - delivery of all All officers side arms and private property , with parole not to take up arms against the United States - and added: "The guerrilla chief Mosby is not included in that parole." From the circular the raider got his most definite information of developments in the principal theater of the war. Reports since Channing Smith set out for Richmond that Johnston had defeated Sherman in a surprise coup and was marching to reinforce Lee. Page 263 Mosbycalled his command together at Salem Monday, the 17th. Among the men who appeared were members of the companies quartered on the Northern Neck. They had returned on the 13th, armed with tales of their exploits, the most daring of which was a night raid on Williamsburg. Also present was Channing Smith, newly back from Richmond with a pathetic account of his experiences. At the evacuated capital, he had waited in hiding until dark and then had gone directly to the home of his uncle, General Chilton, at one time Lee's chief of staff. Soon after he was admitted to the residence a knock sounded onthe door. A candle was lighted and the portal opened to General Lee, out on one of the nightly strolls he took for exercise.
