The son of Leroander (Leroy) and Bethenia (Thiny) Flinchum Nelson, Captain Lee was a Confederate Veteran, having served as Captain of the Home Guard during the Civil War according to his obituary. He was twice married. He married Martha Jane Merritt March 8, 1856 and she bore him seven children before she died in 1876. He married Adocia Elizabeth Tilley July 31,1881 and they were the parents of ten children. He was 71 when his last child was born. Captain Lee and Adocia originated, owned and operated Nelson Funeral Home in Stokes County, NC.
Prior to the origination of Nelson Funeral Home, funerals were conducted by family and friends of the deceased. After his death the funeral home was managed by his widow and children.

The daughter of John and Mary Jane Martin Tilley, she married Captain Leander Nelson July 32, 1881. They were the parents of ten children and six were still living at her death.
Adocia and her husband, Capt. Lee Nelson, were the owners and operators of Nelson Funeral Home in Stokes County, NC. Stories have been told of her personally stitching the coverings of the caskets for the many people that were served by her and Capt. Lee during the time when their funeral service was the only one in Stokes Co.
She was very well loved and respected by the citizens of Stokes County and surrounding area.
