Gaston Ashe's funeral today
Special to The News: Houston, Tex., June 6 - Funeral services for Gaston Ashe, 86, will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the residence of his son, Judge Charles Ashe, 1116 Main Street. Mr. Ashe, a pioneer Texan, died Saturday in San Antonio at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clayton S. Scott, where he resided for the past 11 years.
Mr. Ashe was a native of Tennessee, but came to Texas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Ashe, in 1848. His childhood was spent in Velasco and Galveston. He later removed to the Ashe plantation at the mouth of Cedar Bayou, in Harris County, and his early manhood was spent there.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in Terry's Texas Rangers and served throughout the conflict. After the war, he married Miss Sarah Jones, daughter of Anson Jones, whose name is known to every student of Texas history. His wife died in 1919.
Mr. Ashe is survived by:
- his daughter, Mrs. Scott;
- a son, Judge Ashe;
- a sister, Miss Mary Porter Ashe of Houston,
- and sever grandchildren.
His son has been a district judge in Harris County for many years.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

District Courts closed
Harris County's five district courts were closed today out of respect for Richard Gaston Ashe, 86, years old, pioneer Texan, who died Saturday in San Antonio. The deceased was the father of Judge Charles E. Ashe of the 11th District Court.
Funeral services were held from the residence of Judge Ashe, 1116 West Main Street at 5 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. C.W. Surouse officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery.
Richard Gaston Ashe was a farmer in Lynchburgh, Harris Co., Texas. He and his brother, Samuel Swann Ashe, were both members of the "Bayland Guards", a local militia company, before they left it to join their older brother, William, in "Terry's Texas Rangers" (8th Texas Cavalry Regiment) in the Civil War.
