About Capt. Thomas Oliver Barri, (USA)

Civil War Union Army Officer.

Married Frances "Fanny" Howe on July 3, 1853. She was the youngest sister of Elias Howe Jr, the inventor of the sewing machine. They had three children:

John Atherton Barri (February 27, 1855-1939) Fanny Curtis Barri (August 26, 1857 - ) Married James W. Kirkham. Thomas Howe Barri (September 25, 1862 - )

He was a member of the pre-war 5th Massachusetts Militia enlisting in June 1856, and was the 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant when the Civil War began. He was soon appointed Captain, Company B, 11th United States Regular Infantry on May 14, 1861.

He was shot in the abdomen on the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1863) and died the next day in the field hospital of the 2nd Division, V Corps.

He was posthumously brevetted Major, US Regular Army to date from July 2, 1863 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Gettysburg Pa where he was killed".

On August 31, 1863 his wife, Fanny Barri, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #31618, Certificate #10037).

On December 3, 1869 his son, John Barri, filed for a US Army Minor Dependent Pension (Application #182469, Certificate #139587).
