About Capt. Thomas Gates

At his death in 1622, Sir Thomas Gates had at least two sons, Thomas and Anthony, and three daughters, Margaret, Mary, and Elizabeth.

Second son Thomas died in 1627 at Rochelle.


The Dictionary of American Biography, vol. IV, by Allen Johnson and Dumas Malone says that Sir Thomas was born in Colyford and died in 1621. His eldest son Anthony died in 1632. Second son Thomas died in 1627 at Rochelle. Two daughters, margaret and Elizabeth. Margaret, widow of Anthony and Capt Thomas' two sisters petitioned the privy council in 1637 for arrears in Capt. Thomas' pay after his death. Sir Thomas had taken his wife (not named) and two daughters (also not named) with him on his 1611 trip to Jamestowne (his third voyage to the new world). After his wife died at sea, he sent the two daughters back to England.
