Enlisted in Company D, 11th Infantry Regiment, US Army on 8 August 1861. Rose to Full Captain on 25 January 1867. Discharged 1 August 1869 from the 29th Infantry (transferred 21 September 1866). Was a prisoner of war in Libby and Andersonville prisons.

Married Julia Ann Pratt on 23 December 1868 in Logansport, Indiana

Death certificate lists Residence as Quincy, Place of Death as Truro Nova Scotia, and burial as cremated in Boston. Age 53 yrs 2 mos 18 days, Internal abscess
