About Capt. (USA), James Brown Crain
James Crain served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment on 15 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 in Cairo, IL. He was discharged for Chronic Rheumatism and Diarrhea in Jackson, TN. on July 23, 1862. He then enlisted in Company L, 13th Illinois Cavalry Regiment on 21 Dec 1863 in Jacktown, IL. and mustered in on 12 Feb 1864 in Camp Butler, IL. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 29 Mar 1865. Promoted to Full Captain on 11 Jul 1865. Mustered out on 31 Aug 1865 at Pilot Knob, MO.

May, 1891 he moved his family to Ozark Co. near Dora where he and his sons worked in the lumber business, operating saw mills at different locations in Ozark Co. In May, 1911, he and his wife moved to West Plains. Buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
