About Capt. William Smith

William Smith of New York was a merchant and mariner. He first married Geritje (Charity) Bosch, daughter of Justus Bosch and his wife, Annetje (Ann) Smith, on 10 SEP 1720 in Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, New York . (The name Bosch is often seen as Bush or Busch.)

When Geritje (Charity) died, William Smith (merchant and mariner) married Sarah Het (May, 1744),daughter of Rene Het and his wife, Blanche Dubois, members of the Huguenot community in New York, and neighbors with William (merchant and mariner) and Geritje (Charity) Smith on Queen (Pearl) Street, New York.

The two daughters of Rene Het and Blanche Dubois married two different, unrelated William Smiths. Daughter, Mary Het, was the first wife of Colonial Judge William Smith. Daughter, Sarah Het, was the second wife of William Smith (Merchant and Mariner) who had been married to Geritje (Charity) Bosch., (See Rene Het will, proved Nov. 8 1763, New York) William Smith (merchant and mariner) and Charity Bosch had several children, including: MARY - Married James Jauncey ANN - Married Rev. Benjamin Halt And JOHN -Married first, MARY (SMITH) SMITH (Daughter of Judge William Smith and Mary Het Smith).. John Smith and Mary (Smith)Smith had the following children (among others):

WILLIAM STEPHENS SMITH - married Abigail (Nabby) Adams, daughter of John Adams and Abigail Smith. SARAH SMITH - married Charles Adams, son of John Adams and Abigail Smith John Smith then married second, Margaret. William Smith (Merchant and Mariner) and his second wife, Sarah Het Smith had one child who lived to adulthood, Blanche Smith. Blanche Smith married Rev. Jedediah Chapman, a minister of the Presbyterian Church who, among other things, served as a chaplain in George Washington's army.

"I leave to my youngest children, Blanche and Sarah, a certain piece of land I bought of Richard Willis, lying on the east side of Kings street in the town of Greenwich, Ct. about 8 acres, also ;£400 each. To
my daughter Ann ;^6oo. To, my son John £2 0 and my silver large double tankard. I direct that the house and lot I now live in, on the south side of Queen Street in Hanover Square, and the lands I bought of Joseph Brundridge, and the lands I bought of Justus Bosch of Greenwich, and all my personal estate, except as above to be sold within 3 months and the proceeds to go to my children, John, Blanche, Sarah, Ann, and Mary Jauncey.   2. Ann married Rev. Benjamin Halt.
  3. John Smith married first Mary, daughter of Judge William Smith, second Margaret . Colonel William S. Smith was a distinguished officer in the army of the Revolution. He married Abigail, daughter of President John Adams, and has many descendants. He owned at one time the greater part of what is now Washington Square, New York.

The house " on the south side of Queen Street in Hanover Square, where William Smith lived, is now No. 136 Pearl street. New York. If it was sold it was purchased by his son John, who lived there. His widow, Margaret Smith, sold it to Hugh Stocker.
