About Capt. William Stevens

From the Star , Issue 5939, 3 August 1897, Page 2: INVERCARGILL, August 2. Captain William Stevens, one of the oldest settlers in New Zealand, died today, aged seventy-two. He came to Riverton in 1845, and followed whaling with his half-brother, the late Captain Howell, afterwards going into the pastoral industry. The old man was greatly respected, his rugged honesty being a prominent feature of his character. He was a man of few words, but on the public bodies with which he was connected his opinions were much valued.
