Benjamin was born in Montgomery Co., Ohio to Thomas Rose and Sarah Irwin.
Benjamin served as a captain in Company B, 11th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. He fought in many battles, including Shiloh and Vicksburg. He was taken prisoner at Atlanta on July 22, 1864, but was released in a prisoner exchange and participated in the March to the Sea.
Benjamin was married to Esther Coate on Aug. 17, 1865 in Le Grand, Iowa, and they had three children.
Benjamin was employed as postmaster of Quarry, Iowa before relocating to Cloud Co., Kansas. There, he was elected county clerk in 1890. He was also a Master Mason.
