He was the captain in the colonial regular troops, sub-lieutenant in the navy. His whole life change in 1694 when he married Catherine-Jeanne Le Moyne with both Louis de Buade de Frontenac and the intendant, Jean Bochart de Champaigny, attending the ceremony. He was really accepted into the energetic and clannish Le Moyne Family. In 1697 he was an officer in the military expedition to Newfoundland led by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville. When D'Iberville subsequently moved his base of operations to France, he followed D'Iberville. When D'Iberville and his four brothers sailed from France to secure the French colony of Louisiana in 1701. Payen, then a sub-lieutenant in the navy, served in the ship commanded by Joseph Le Moyne de Serigny. In 1706 he accompanied D'Iberville his final expedition to the West Indies, this time commanding his own ship. He died early in 1707 after going with his ship to relieve starving colonists at Mobile Bay.
