About Captain David Macdonald
An excellent (unpublished) biography exists entitled "Notes on Captain David Macdonald, Bombay Marine (Indian Navy), related Maughans and others in the extended Bombay Marine family" by Prof. F. Andrew Smith, University of Adelaide, 31 December 2010.
However the author's opinion that a William Maughan born c.1868 was the son of Henry and Jane Maughan cannot be substantiated and also appears to be contrary to the Maughan family tradition of always naming the first son after the father, which facts cast serious doubt on the validity of his assertion. In addition, Maria Maughan's twin brother was given the name William at birth in 1785 which would have been most unlikely if there was already an older brother of that name.
