Added by Elwin C. Nickerson About This ancestor: CAPTAIN MONITOR: The Harwich Independent, Thurs., Aug. 13, 1874, notes from the Boston Journal, dated South Dennis, Aug. 1, 1874... "Capt. Frederick Nickerson, for 30 years familiar with the Atlantic coast, entered the naval department early in the War, through which he served as fleet pilot in the expeditions and enterprises then under taken. It was his fortune to take the original Monitor from New York to Fortress Monroe, where immediately on her arrival, the exciting battle with the Merrimac was fought. It brings that event vividly to mind to hear Capt. Nickerson, now living in Dennis, describe the charge of the Merrimac upon the little Monitor, the careening of the Merrimac, by which her unprotected surface below the water line was exposed into which the Monitor sent a cylindrical shot penetrating the rebel disabling her machinery and the subsequent sinking of the threatening craft. /ECN/
