Bio: John was baptized (a) in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts on March 26, 1710, the son of Thomas Curtis and Phebe Gould. He married (b) Hepzibah Hale on January 16, 1732 in Oxford, Massachusetts. Although John was elderly during the fight for independence he was a patriot and supported the Revolutionary War efforts. He was a member of the (c) Committee of Correspondence in 1775 and a (d) Selectman in 1776. Both his sons fought in the war: His oldest son Asa was a (e) sergeant, serving with Captain Nathaniel Healy's company of minute-men in Colonel Ebenezer Larned's regiment, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775. His youngest son John Jr was also a (f) sergeant and served under Captain Benjamin Richard, in Colonel Dike's regiment.

Captain John Curtis was the son of Thomas and Phoebe {Gould} Curtis and the grandson of John and Mary {Looke} Curtis. His great-grandfather was Zaccheus Curtis, the first of this family branch to arrive in the New World aboard the ship "James" that sailed from Southampton on 5 April 1635 for Salem in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Capt. John was a Committee of Correspondence Member during the War for Independence and he served as selectman for the Town of Dudley. It is believed that he saw action in the French & Indian War. In 1936 the General Ebenezer Learned Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, who were commemorating graves of Revolutionary soldiers, placed bronze S. A. R. markers at both his grave site and that of his son Lt. John Curtis buried in the same plot.
