"...gentleman, who came to New England and settled at Kingston in 1669, was Clerk of His Majesty's Commission, Recorder of Narragansett Province, a Captain in the forces, and His Majesty's Justice of the Peace in 1683."

Captain and Honorable John Fones, 12 of Westerly, R. I., was the [grand]son of Thomas and Anna (Winthrop) Fones. Anna Winthrop was the daughter of Adam and Anna (Brown) Winthrop, and the sister of Governor Winthrop, of Massachusetts. Captain Fones was a lineal descendant of 'William Fowns,of Saxby, Esq.,' and his wife, daughter of Robert Hyelton, Knight.13 A member of the court martial at Newport, for the trial of Indians charged with taking part with King Philip in 1676, with the title of Captain. John Fones was also Deputy, from 1679 to 1681, and later was respectively Justice, Clerk of the Court of Commissioners, Permanent Clerk of the Court of Records, and in 1698 was Assistant and Deputy.

He first appears in Newport, RI, in 1659, when he calls himself servant to William Coddington.

William was the first "Judge" of the colony at Portsmouth and the first governor of Portsmouth and Newport on the Island of Aquidneck, Colony of Rhode Island, and first president of the four united towns of the colony.
