Captain (CPT) Van T. Boughton was born in 1888 in Troy, New York. He left his job as a civil engineer with the Canadian Pacific Railroad to serve with the U.S. Army's 11th Engineer Regiment in World War I. Boughton was assigned to Company D as a senior master engineer. During his time overseas from July 1917 to March 1919, he was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant and then promoted to captain. Boughton was present at an early engagement southwest of Cambrai in September 1917 as well as another engagement in November of the same year. His duties mostly involved planning and building various railroads in France. His final assignment in the regiment was as adjutant. Following the war Boughton wrote the 11th Engineer Regiment's unit history, worked as a civil engineer in New York, and eventually became the senior associate editor of the Engineering news record at the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. He died in 1964.
