About Captain Wendye Oxford
There are a handful of examples of men named "Wendy" prior to the late 19th century, after which it became an almost exclusively female name (thanks to James M. Barrie and Peter Pan). It may have been short for something Frankish (Wendel, e.g.) or Welsh (Guendoleu?).
He was the second son of Henry Oxford (born Evans), became a captain in the royal army in the Garrison of Sir Samuel Lukes, and after his side lost was levied a ruinous fine and banished from England. https://competitivestrategies.us/john-oxford-1639-1719-immigrant/
